Before the lean manufacturing turnaround: Client company is a US-owned manufacturer, headquartered in California, supplying molds, metal and plastic components, as well and assembly services to medical, dental and lighting customers in the USA.
Initial state: The factory management, staff and operators were untrained in quality procedures, training procedures and production flow optimization. Turnaround at the management level was extremely high, as were defects and customer complaints.
The CEO, adept at selling products and services, was tied down fighting fires to save existing customers, so key-account management suffered greatly.
Service description: As improvement consultant, Walker trained management and staff in lean and quality operations, proposed improvements in production layout and procedures, and trained top-management in continuous improvement procedures. I was consulted in restructuring and hiring in support of quality and production leadership functions.
2010 : Initiated consulting contract
2011 : Completed restructuring
2012 : Set up and implemented training in best practices including lean manufacturing and kanban management systems
2012 : Moved from batch & queue to continuous flow
2013 : Successful acquisition by a US private equity group
